WEBSITE - SOCIAL

Eric Johnson is a photographer raised in Newark, New Jersey, and is now based in New York City.

His gift for portraiture is one of the hallmarks of his art. Through his work, he embraces the soul of New York, bringing together young and old, black and white, natives and immigrants from all walks of life as a community. Johnson, whose archive goes back more than 30 years has had work published in Rolling Stone, 032c, Vogue, Dazed & Confused, The Face, W and The New York Times, Interview Magazine, to name a few. He has photographed a dizzying array of luminaries from Muhammad Ali and Floyd Mayweather to Peter Bogdanovich and Jim Jarmusch. Eric Johnson is best known for his work documenting the US music culture of the late 90s and early 2000s…his photos of Biggie Smalls, Nas, Missy Elliott, Lauryn Hill and the late Aaliyah defined an era of US music photography. His work has always been representative of the current zeitgeist and his community around him, capturing names like Khalif, Ian Isiah, to Juliana Huxtable to Joey Leibeija on an average night at his New York studio: Upstairs at Eric’s. And his more recent work with the likes of Doja Cat and Shygirl places him at the heart of contemporary pop music culture in 2022 - this year Eric was awarded with Abbey Road Studios inaugural Icon award in photography and announced "an unsung hero" by V Magazine when he was featured in their August 2022 'HEROES' issue. Eric Jonhson's story continues to bring together and capture some of the most distinct and individual creatives who exist on the edge of culture, and redefine it from the outside in.
